thank you for hosting me here today. it is a privilege to be with you to talk about the challenges before us in the world – and how the world bank group is working to be***e as effective as possible in improving the lives of the poor and vulnerable.

the fighting continues within syria, and the impact of broken lives and broken economies only grows by the day.

always, we are working with governments, or ***panies, or civil society groups to help build strong and sustainable foundations for development. this supports the livelihoods of millions of people in the middle east, and billions more around the world, who aspire to good jobs, a good education, and access to quality health care.

a critical part of our work is in countries emerging from conflict, affected by conflict, or stuck in a persistent state of fragility. as we know all too well, when a country remains in a long state of fragility, conflict often erupts. the world bank group and the wider global ***munity need to confront the ***plex institutional and social challenges in these fragile states, because the cost of inaction is high and the reward of well-designed interventions is great.

when we have the opportunity to build institutions, infrastructure, and human capacity in fragile states, or when we can put together a deal that brings in desperately needed private sector investment, we must seize it. when we fail to help countries develop in a way that is inclusive or fail to help countries build strong governance, we are all affected by the result, which is often a country engulfed in flames, as is syria today.

in the middle east, most of the countries experienced relatively strong growth of 4 to 5 percent a year in the decade before the arab spring. yet serious problems were lurking below the su***ce. an increasingly educated young middle class was frustrated that the few available jobs were reserved for those with more connections than talent.

the private sector operated by earning privileges from the state, leading to a form of crony capitali** that only helped a few, and undermined exports and jobs.

good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. the title of my speech today is "crossing the sea" . an english poet by the name of rudyard kipling once wrote in this poem "we and they" :

all the people like us are we

and everyone else is they

we live over the sea

while they live over the way

we eat pork and beef with cow horn-handled knives

they who gobble their rice off a leaf

are horrified out of their lives.

when these lines first caught my eyes, i was shocked--how could two people remain so isolated and ignorant of each other in the past? today's society, of course, is an entirely different picture. those people who used to eat with gobble their rice might be as well have taken to fish and chips.

indeed, just take china as example; our modern life has been influenced by western style of living in so many ways that it's no longer surprising to see teenagers going crazy about rock-and-roll, whole families dining out at mcdonald's and even rather elderly people dressed in apple jeans.

however, these are only some expressions of the cultural changes taking place in our society today. what is really going on is a subtle but significant restructuring of the nation's mentality. just look around.

how many college graduates are ready to ***pete aggressively for every job opportunity, whereas not long ago they were asked just to sit idle and wait for whatever was to be assigned to them by the government?

how many young people are now eager to seek for an independent life whereas only two decades ago they would rely totally on their parents to arrange for their future? ask anyone who participates in today's speech contest. who has not ***e with a will to fight and who has not ***e determined to achieve self-fulfillment in winning the game?

and i'm quite certain that if confucius had lived to see today's china, he would have been horrified to see young lovers kissing each other in public places in an unreserved expression of their passion.

it is therefore evident that we as descendants of an ancient eastern civilization are already living under strong influence of the western culture. but it is not only in china that we find the incorporation of the two cultures.

take the united states as an example: during the 1980s, in face of the overwhelming ***petition from japan, many american ***panies such as the ford began to adopt a teamwork management from their rivals, the essence of which, lay at the very core of eastern culture.

take the chinese acupuncture as another example: this traditional treatment of diseases is finally finding its way to the west and hence the underlying notion that illness is resulted from the imbalance between yin and yang within the body--an idea which would strike any westerner as incredible in the past!

ladies and gentlemen, we live in a great epoch when the global integration of economy and the information revolution have brought cultures of the world closer than ever before. we live in a particular era when countries, east and west, find themselves in need of readjusting their traditional values. we live, at the same time, at a critical juncture of our evolution because such problems as ethnic conflicts and regional unrest are increasingly posing a threat to the peace and happiness of the whole human race.

to cope with such an era and to embrace an even brighter future, we need to learn to live more harmoniously in a world ***munity which is be***ing **aller and **aller. my dear fellow students, our ***mand of the english language render sit possible for us to gain an insight into western culture while retaining our own cultural identity.

therefore, it is our sacred responsibility to promote the cultural exchanges and hence the mutual understanding between china and the rest of the world.

it is my happiest dream that new generation of chinese will not only grow up drinking coca cola and watching hollywood, but also be blessed with the far-reaching benefits of multiple cultures; benefits that our forefathers had never, ever dreamed of.

to end my speech, i would like to quote rudyard kipling again:

last august i was told that in all likelihood i had three to six months left to live. i am onmonth nine now and i am gonna get down and do any push-ups…but there will be a short pick-up basketball game later.

” and that’s where my solace ***e from.

find you passion and follow it.

and if nothing else i hope that all of youcan find that kind of passion and that kind of love in your life.

first, self-study is an effective way to broaden our horizon and extend our　can arrange our time and adjust our process flexibly according to our own concrete situation. for example, as college students, we can use some of our leisure time everyday to learn other subjects by self-study in addition to our major knowledge. at the same time, we also can extend our major knowledge by self-study of other subjects.

但是我听沃老师说是给成功大学的优秀同学们讲课，我感觉我就算丢脸我也要来，这是我的荣幸。

今天我想从两方面给大家谈谈，第一个是关于等待，第二个是关于依靠你自己，好，咱现在进入正题。

在日常生活中，我们常常需要等待，红灯停，绿灯才能行、食堂打饭要等，买火车票要等，一个“等”字已经贯穿于我们的生活，等待谁都会，我玩着手机等开饭可以，看着书等图书馆开门也可以，关键是，在等待的过程中，我们在做什么，我们在通过怎样的方式来度过等待的时间。当然，这些都是生活中的小事，或许不足挂齿，但是，如果我把等待上升为一个人生和事业的程度上，大家可能要重视了，我们的付出，也许不能起到立竿见影的效果，因此，我们需要等待，不急不躁、不气不馁，并且最好在等待的空隙里琢磨点事情，

我有一个习惯，就是讲什么东西时喜欢从某个故事着手，今天也不想例外。故事还得从我上高中的时候说起。长久以来，在我的内心深处有一堵墙，它让我对精彩望而却步，对梦想不敢奢求，它大概就是所谓的不自信，也就表现为能力的不被体现与对自己的轻视。

不自信的原因大概就是因为“成绩不好”。大家都看重成绩，老师、家长喜欢成绩好的同学。于是很多像我这样成绩不理想却充满着发展潜力的人只能在角落里哀叹“时运不齐”。

但是我常常希望自己有这么一个机会来改变一下自己，多少让自己变得成熟一些，脸皮厚一些，不过我总是羞于跨出这么一步，很多机会就这样白白流逝，到后来甚至形成了恶性循环。越是不敢改变越是不自信，不怕大家笑话，我高三的时候女生看我一眼我就脸红。不过我的命运出现了转机，那也是一个小故事。

有一次我出远门，车来得晚，好不容易上了车我想起给送我的叔叔发了条短信“叔、我终于上车了，这车晚点了”。过了不到一分钟短信回来了，是这样说的“上了车就好，路上小心点。记住一句话，生活中也会有很多情况让你停滞，若是无法前进，就一边努力一边等待吧”。

这句话说得我是五体投地。更重要的的是，这句话给了我很大的启发。我想确实是这样的，有些时候我们确实寸步难行，生活会不经意间给与我们苦难或是挫折，与其埋怨，不如努力。

于是我发挥了我现学现用的特长，现在的不自信让我不敢迈出第一步，索性我就先不在这了纠结了，我先丰富一下我的大脑，等到我稍微自信的那一天，也许就能锋芒毕露了。高三那一年我看了很多书，上至诸子百家、下至找死的兔子，我都看。当踏入宁职院的大门时我想我的春天来了，我要去改变一下，勇敢地踏出第一步，不然我都对不起我一年来用数学课的时间偷偷看的《德川家康》。

我竞选了班长、参加演讲比赛、学生会，这些经历都深深刺激到了我。影响到了我，我的现状就好像从清朝末年的闭关锁国一下子到了新中国的改革开放。进步是有的、遗憾、不足也是有的，但是我取得了成功，至少我改变了、不那么扭扭捏捏、顾影自怜了。

最好的证据就是面对在座的这么多优秀的同学我还能说出来话。而在高中的时候，我讲多长时间久抖多长时间。这就是我的故事、同学们，请记住那句话“生活并非一帆风顺、无法前行的时候，就请你一边努力一边等待吧。

要是大家到现在还没有厌倦的话我想给大家讲一讲依靠你自己的问题。相信你自己，依靠你自己，让自己成长起来，而不是靠别的什么。光是凭借“靠”与“依赖”，我们不会长大。

为了让大家更直观的理解我的这种想法，我试着从中国教育的角度来简单剖析一下，论证我们为什么要靠自己。仅是一家之言，不足之处请还大家多多包涵。

不知同学们有没有发现一个问题:从小的时候，父母就非常注重我们的学习成绩。如果你某次数学测试只得了十五分，回到家竟然还能若无其事的吃饭，爸妈看到你这样，会说，你看看你，成绩这么差，我小的时候数学考了98分都会回家痛哭。

我不否认我们在座的各位同学的高中成绩不如本科生，但是我有一个观点：中国绝大部分的大学的录取标准是什么？-----是你的高考成绩，而非其他。

换言之，相对于本科生而言，我们不是一个解题高手，仅此而已。

现在我来分析一下我们的高考制度吧。中国的大学设置录取分数线，600分你有资格上北大，清华，580你可以选择上山大，上浙大，200分你就歇菜。但不管分数如何，总有大学愿意录取你。

你来读专科，仅仅是解题手段不高明。

每个人都有自己擅长的领域，有自己独到的简介，但也不免有偏颇或不成熟之处。考大学的优秀学子千千万万，那么学校通过什么手段录取学生才能知道他的思想如何，知识体系是否丰富呢？大学无法完全判断你所有的精妙思想，于是它只能通过一种较为科学的方式将你抽象的思想具象化，比如说考你数学方程式、集合、函数的解题过程，或者是要求你写一篇命题作文，以这种方式将你无序的思维专业化理论化的整理出来，那就是考试了。

但考试充其量也只是在某些方面检测你的能力，它本身是片面的，单调的，无法覆盖全部的。

“现代科举制”有一定的积极意义，在一定程度上选拔了鹤立鸡群的学习佼佼者，却将大部分有创新精神的人排斥在外，顺我者欢迎光临，逆我者沙扬娜拉。大学录取了众多的“高手”，而“淘汰者”与此同时开始了在其他方面的发展。你说孰优孰劣如何定论？
