Father had a family of sons who were perpetually quarrelling among themselves. When he failed to heal their disputes by his exhortations, he determined to give them a practical illustration of the evils of disunion; and for this purpose he one day told them to bring him a bundle of sticks. When they had done so, he placed the faggot into the hands of each of them in succession, and ordered them to break it in pieces. They each tried with all their strength, and were not able to do it.

He next unclosed the faggot, and took the sticks separately, one by one, and again put them into their hands, on which they broke them easily. He then

addressed them in these words: “My sons, if you are of one mind, and unite to assist each other, you will be as this faggot, uninjured by all the attempts of your enemies; but if you are divided among yourselves, you will be broken as easily as these sticks.”

in ancient times a man named zou ji, chi tall and impressive looking, had served as the prime minister of the state of qi.

one morning, he tidied his clothes and hat, looked into the mirror, and asked his wife: "look, who is more handsome, xu gong living in the north of the city or i?"

his wife replied: "you are far more handsome. xu gong is no match for you!"

xu gong of the north of the city was a well-known handsome man in the state of qi. zou ji really didn't believe he was more handsome than xu gong. so he asked his concubine:

"look, who is more handsome, xu gong or i?"

his concubine also said: "xu gong is no match for you!"

the next day, a guest came to discuss some matter with him. zou ji asked his guest the same question: "who is more handsome, xu gong or i?

"the guest answered positively: "xu gong is not as handsome as you."

another day passed and zou ji met xu gong in person. he stared closely at the other for some time and carefully xxpared him with himself. he really couldn't see that he was more handsome than xu gong.

later, he again looked into the mirror. the more he looked at himself, the more he felt he was not as handsome as xu gong.

zou ji was rather restless in his mind. at night, lying on the bed, he pondered: he was not as handsome as xu gong, but why did these three persons say he was more handsome?

in the end, he came to understand the reason: "my wife says i am handsome because she shows favouriti** to me. my concubine says i am handsome because she is afraid of me.

my guest says i am handsome because he wants to curry2 my favour."

once, chun yukun rexxmended seven able and virtuous scholars to king xuan of the state of qi. king xuan was surprised and said: "i heard that talented people are hard to find.

if one able and virtuous scholar can be found within a circumference2 of 1, 000 li, it cannot be regarded as few. if 100 years witnesses the advent of a saint, it cannot be regarded as few. now you rexxmend seven able and virtuous scholars all at once, then there are too many able and virtuous scholars.

"chun yukun said: "birds of the same feather always flock together. wild beasts of the same kind always walk together.

for example, if we wish to find medicinal herbs like the root of chinese thorowax and the root of balloonflower on the marsh4, we will never find even one in our whole life. but if we go to the north side of the zeshu mountain and the liangfu mountain, we will need carts to carry them back. in the world, things of the same kind always gather together, and it is the same with people.

if you want me to select able and virtuous scholars, it will be like getting water from the river, or getting fire from a flint. what is so strange about that? i am going to rexxmend another big batch of able and virtuous scholars to you, far more than these seven.

in a village, a dog often ****ted by the side of a well.

several tens of families in the whole village drew water from the well. they all hated the dog, and wanted to tell its master to have it kept under control.

but whenever the people who wanted to lodge a xxplaint against it came near the gate of its master's house, the dog would pounce upon them, barking and biting, which frightened them so much that no one dared to xxe to the house.

it seems that people who are afraid to have their shortxxings revealed are probably like this dog, always trying to block the way so that others dare not lodge xxplaints against it.

one day, a big tiger was looking for food in a dense forest. a fox happened to scurry by, so the tiger pounced upon the fox and caught it.

at this time, the fox suddenly hit upon a bright idea to get itself out of the predicament. it boosted its courage and said to the tiger: "do you dare to eat me?

"taken aback, the tiger asked: "why not?"

"heaven sends me to rule over all you animals. if you eat me, you will defy the order of heaven. what a nerve!

"hoodwinked for the moment, the tiger released its claws.

the fox wagged its tail proudly and said: "i will take you to the other animals, and show you my power and prestige."

the fox and the tiger, one in front and the other in back, walked towards the depths of the forest. the fox was very cocky, shaking its head and wagging its tail. the tiger was dubious, looking around.

the boars, deer, gazelles, bares, etc. in the forest saw the fox xxe swaggering, entirely different from its usual self, and couldn't understand what was the matter. but when they looked behind the fox:

"oh, a big tiger!" the wild animals, large and **all, all fled for their lives.

now the fox was greatly pleased and said to the tiger: "see, who isn't afraid of me?"

in the past a family in the state of chu made sacrificial offers to their ancestors, and after that they rewarded the people who helped in the ceremony with the pot of wine used in it.

there were many helpers but only one pot of wine. who should drink it? someone suggested:

"each person is to draw a snake on the ground. whoever draws fastest and most lifelike will get the pot of wine."

everyone thought this was a good idea.

one man drew very fast, finished it in the twinkling of an eye, and was given the pot of wine. at this moment, he saw that the others had not yet finished, so he wanted to flaunt his skill once more. he said proudly:

"how slow you are! let me add a few snake feet."

holding the wine pot in his left hand, he began to add feet to the finished snake with his right hand. when he was just adding feet to the snake, another man finished his drawing. he grabbed the wine pot at once, saying:

"a snake has no feet. how could you add feet to it? the first one who finished drawing a snake is i, not you.

"having said this, the man drank the wine with an easy conscience.
